bopdrop is a unique social media app where you can only post a song and a caption twice a day, one before noon and one after noon. friends and strangers can see your posts and interact by liking, commenting, and the most meaningful reaction-saving the song to their library. outside of posting, you can edit your own profile that includes a banner image, profile photo, bio, three social links (instagram, spotify, and apple music), your top three songs, favorite genres, and favorite artists. occasionally, bopdrop (inspired by bereal) will send a “bopprompt” and a hashtag to share them to, giving you 10 minutes to share as many songs as you want.
i downloaded bopdrop after my friend texted me saying that she had downloaded the app over summer 2022. i had seen tiktoks promoting it for a while, but was suspicious because the only tiktoks were from the bopdrop tiktok account. i love getting validation for posting songs that would be ignored on instagram. i have discovered a lot of new music and new friends, following mutuals on the other social media platforms linked in their bios like instagram, spotify, and letterboxd. is is safe? sure!
anyways, i go through phases of not posting anything for a month, and then posting at every opportunity. i just wish it would give you the opportunity to select what section of the song previews in the app, because the app picks the worst parts of songs.
with most music communities, there is always some pretentious expectations to post an artist no one would recognize and stake your claim outside of the mainstream. as much as i am a mysterious cultured alternative indie kid, i am equal parts a basic pop girlie who knows everything there is to know about one direction and taylor swift. additionally, i am also one of those annoying “born in the wrong generation” girls who loves the beatles and david bowie. bop drop is a place for all aspects of my personality to run free and be validated by other multi-faceted music lovers. (admittedly) my most popular bopdrop was me posting “after party” by don toliver, with 40 strangers commenting “ok i pull up” under it. reassuring.
