locket is a widget app that was released on the apple app store in early 2022. it allows you to add up to 20 friends and take photos to share with one or any of them. the photos from your friends can be seen in a widget that you add to your home screen. the widget size could be 2x2 or 4x4 app sizes. locket became very popular following apple’s ios 14 release in fall 2020, which allowed users to customize their phone home screens with widgets that automatically updated. there is no limit to how many photos you can send a day. later updates include emoji reactions, comments, and captions.

i downloaded this app after seeing it on my tiktok for you page at the beginning of 2022. i only have my boyfriend on it since it was advertised as an app for couples when i first saw it. i was definitely more attached to the app at the beginning, treating it as snapchat in a sense. i would send a photo whenever i was thinking about him or saw that he had updated his photo.

my boyfriend and i classify our relationship as a “inconvenient-distance” relationship, in that we live an hour apart and usually only see one another in-person once a week. this was a nice addition to our relationship, a little reminder that we’re existing and living our own lives separately but still can be connected. but it’s not just a couples app! my friends use it and share little lockets with 20 of their friends.

locket updates reminds me that we’re all just in a little simulation going about our little tasks even when my perception of others is off. maybe i’m thinking too deeply about a widget app. anyways, it’s cute, and there’s little commitment. (besides a random text telling you to update the locket since it has been the same photo of me waking up from a nap has been the widget for a week)

i recommend! you just have to be influential enough to convince the people in your life to sacrifice some home page real estate for you.
